The Friends of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge (FOW) is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the enduring protection, management and appreciation of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge and its environs.

Nature Trail Hours: Sunrise to Sunset

Visitor Center open: Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 4:00pm

Welcome Cabin Open: Sundays 12:00 to 2:00pm 

Both trails have minimal grade (1 – 5%)
and slope (1 - 2%)

White Oak Trail

Short Loop: 1.5 miles
Long Loop: 2 miles

Visitor Center to White Oak Trail: 0.5 Miles

Black Tupelo Trail

Total Length: 3.4 miles
Visitor Center to Indian Landing: 1.45 miles

Visitor Center to end of accessible trail 0.3 miles

Connector Trail
Total Length: 0.5 miles 

Rules and Regulations

Everything on the refuge is either a home or food for wildlife, so during your visit help protect wildlife by respecting the following regulations:

  • Keep pets off of refuges, their presence disturbs wildlife;
  • Use official trails only;
  • Take only pictures, leave only footprints;
  • Respect refuge boundary signs, closed areas and private property;
  • Pack your garbage out with you.
