National Wildlife Refuge



The Friends of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge (FOW) is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the enduring protection, management and appreciation of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge and its environs.

Groups and Organization

US Fish and Wildlife
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System, which encompasses 540 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas. It also operates 69 national fish hatcheries, 64 fishery resource offices and 81 ecological services field stations.

Post-Morrow Foundation
To preserve and conserve the rural, cultural and historical character of the hamlet of Brookhaven and surrounding areas in Suffolk County, New York. This includes undeveloped real estate to be kept in its natural state as a sanctuary, open space or natural garden and improved and developed land to be used for the maintenance and care of such properties as well as for possible display and exhibit of appropriate collections.

Dennis Puleston Osprey Fund
The Dennis Puleston Osprey Fund encourages research about ospreys on Long Island, improve their nesting opportunities and educate the public about them. The Fund recognizes that for ospreys to be successful they must have a viable and healthy habitat in which to live, an objective that Dennis clearly understood and supported.

Friends of the Bay
For over 20 years it has been Friends of the Bay's mission to preserve, protect and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor estuary and the surrounding watershed.

Long Island Pine Barrens
The Long Island Pine Barrens Protection Act of 1993 created the five member Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, whose mission is to create and implement a comprehensive land use plan for the Central Pine Barrens that would protect and preserve valuable Pine Barrens resources.
